Wilkinson’s Caliber 5659 WOS is our recreation of the original single coil pickups found on the iconic S style solid body electric guitar between 1956 and 1959, hours of listening and comparison has gone into creating this set of vintage tone replica’s.
Hand crafted in small runs we use 3/16″(4.8mm) Alnico V magnets with slightly chamfered tops between black fiber plates, dipped in clear lacquer and air dried they are wound with AWG .42 gauge formvar wire to our specific settings, and once again dipped in clear lacquer and air dried to prevent feedback from the coils.
Available individually or as a set the Caliber 5659 WOS pickups feature staggered pole pieces for the authentic string response of the 50’s era and cotton covered push back vintage wires.
Trev Wilkinson’s induction into music was through the tones of what we now call iconic or legendary players, the sounds these artists produced inspired Trev’s playing and also his future in music.
While Hank Marvin’s use of vibrato peaked the young inventor’s interest in a device that would become such an integral part of the Wilkinson brand, the tone and sound created by Clapton, Beck, Green and other influential players was a massive influence as were the instruments and components that created these tones.
The R series of pickups is the result of years of listening to pickups, time spent with legendary inventors such as Seth Lover and Leo Fender discussing all aspects about sound, materials and production methods, add these ingredients to hours and hours of testing and tweaking and you have the R series, our finest pickups.
