Dan Electro

Founded in New Jersey in 1947 by Nathan Daniel, Dan Electro produced products for Sears, Roebuck and Co and Montgomery Ward under the Dan Electro, Silvertone and Airline brand names.

Most famously known for the hollow bodied instruments constructed of Masonite and poplar, the Dan Electro brand and it’s associated brands were primarily designed to save costs, and increase production speed with no frills but good sounding instruments.

While low priced the Dan Electro instruments had a very identifiable look with their Lipstick Tube style pickups, Simple bridge design, unique body shapes and striking colour options.

One of the most striking instruments they created was without doubt the Coral branded Electric Sitar, designed in conjunction with famous session guitar player Vincent (Vinnie) Bell, this instrument has appeared in the hands of many famous players including Steve Howe and Steve Vai.

Another model of note is the shorthorn model famously used by Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page.

Ownership of Dan Electro moved in 1966 to Music Corporation of America, however within three years the company closed down and it was not until The Evets Corporation purchased the Dan Electro brand name in the late 1990’s that the brand saw the success it deserved.
